Sun and Star

DSU Notes

  1. The signs around Dunelm House which state that "Our Students Union opposes behaviour of a sexist ... or otherwise oppressive nature"
  2. That the aims and objectives of the Union are, amongst other things, "to promote coordination and maintain ... the general interests of students in the University of Durham ... without regard to race, sex etc."

DSU Believes

  1. That sexism is unacceptable within DSU (or at all).
  2. That pictures of topless women as shown in The Sun or The Star are offensive to women who have come to university in order to succeed in the world and represent a bar to their equality by trivialising them.
  3. That DSU should not promote this by selling The Sun or The Star in Dunelm House.

DSU Resolves

  1. To ban The Sun and The Star from sale in Dunelm House.

Defeated 12-39-9 (at a previously quorate UGM on the college bars matter which passed 385-0-0).

B1: This does seem a little like an afterthought, doesn't it...

B2: Presumably they are not offensive to women who have come to university because they couldn't think of anything better to do for three years?...

A written question had been received to the previous Council asking why the shop didn't stock the Sun but did stock the Star, and when these double standards would be stopped by stocking the Sun as well.

Given recent press coverage of DSU, it's probably a good thing it didn't pass.
