Question to Chair of Steering.

  1. Would it not be reasonable to assume the clock in the President/Welfare reception was set as near as possible to UTC (GMT to those supporters of the Empire), especially when the aforementioned clock is being used to rule on important matters such as election nomination validities.
  2. Would it not be reasonable to expect the Chair of Steering Committee (or his nominee) to ensure that the aforementioned clock is set to the correct time?
  3. Were it to come to light that someone had had their candidacy ruled out of order owing to their papers being handed in 20 seconds late (according to the aforementioned clock) but that the aforementioned clock had in fact been two minutes fast (compared with UTC/GMT), would it not be reasonable to rule that person in order after all.
  4. Were that person to be ruled out of order in spite of the above circumstances, would it not be reasonable to point out the ensuing costs incurred by an already (so we are often told) hard-up Union in the running of a by-election

Answer

  1. It is reasonable and correct to assume the clock in the President/Welfare Office is as close to UTC (GMT) as is possible.
  2. It is reasonable and correct to assume that the Chair of Steering is now ensuring the correct time setting of that clock.
  3. In any cross campus election the definitive clock for the close of nominations at noon is the President/Welfare clock. Once noon, as defined by that clock, has been reached, nominations will be deemed to have closed. Therefore all nominations received after this time will be ruled out of order, be it 1 second or 1 month.
  4. Elections to NUS conderence require a cross-campus ballot. As only five candidates stood for election there was a spare place. A by-election is therefore necessary. On top of this, the allocation of voting cards has increased by one requiring a ballot for this place as well.
