DSU Notes
- The increasing activity in DSU around womens issues.
- The heavy burden this puts on the Welfare Affairs Officer under present structures.
- The practice in the last few years of women standing for the post of W.E.O. intending to do work mainly around women's issues.
- The decision of ordinary NUS Conference in Easter 1986 to establish the post of W.O. on the national executive, elected by women for women.
DSU Believes
- The post of W.O. should be established as a full member of DSU Exec.
- The W.O. should be a woman, elected by women on a cross-campus ballot.
-
The responsibilities of the W.O. would be:
- To raise issues within the union which affect women.
- To ensure that these issues are treated with sensitivity and are acted upon.
- To initiate campaigns on behalf of women, in cooperation with the relevant officers of the union.
- To ensure that the atmosphere of the union is conducive to the participation of, and non-discrimination against, women.
- To bring a woman's perspective to every campaign and issue in which the union is involved.
- The dissemination of information relating to women.
- To liase with Womens' Groups within the union.
DSU Resolves
- To create the post of a Womens Officer.
- To take the necessary steps to ensure that the Womens Officer is included in the cross campus ballot for non-sabbaticals held in November.
- To amend the constitution as necessary.
- To allocate a budget for the Womens' Officer when the estimates are drawn up.
- To provide printed information to be placed next to ballot boxes explaining why the post must be elected only by women.
