DSU Notes

  1. The increasing activity in DSU around womens issues.
  2. The heavy burden this puts on the Welfare Affairs Officer under present structures.
  3. The practice in the last few years of women standing for the post of W.E.O. intending to do work mainly around women's issues.
  4. The decision of ordinary NUS Conference in Easter 1986 to establish the post of W.O. on the national executive, elected by women for women.

DSU Believes

  1. The post of W.O. should be established as a full member of DSU Exec.
  2. The W.O. should be a woman, elected by women on a cross-campus ballot.
  3. The responsibilities of the W.O. would be:
    1. To raise issues within the union which affect women.
    2. To ensure that these issues are treated with sensitivity and are acted upon.
    3. To initiate campaigns on behalf of women, in cooperation with the relevant officers of the union.
    4. To ensure that the atmosphere of the union is conducive to the participation of, and non-discrimination against, women.
    5. To bring a woman's perspective to every campaign and issue in which the union is involved.
    6. The dissemination of information relating to women.
    7. To liase with Womens' Groups within the union.

DSU Resolves

  1. To create the post of a Womens Officer.
  2. To take the necessary steps to ensure that the Womens Officer is included in the cross campus ballot for non-sabbaticals held in November.
  3. To amend the constitution as necessary.
  4. To allocate a budget for the Womens' Officer when the estimates are drawn up.
  5. To provide printed information to be placed next to ballot boxes explaining why the post must be elected only by women.

B2: Well, while this might be where that Palatinate (14 June 2002, p12) columnist got the idea from, since I doubt it's been the case since WO stopped being elected by Cross-campus ballot, this seems unlikely. Maybe they were just getting it confused with Women's Conference Delegate

B3.f: What, every campaign and issue? Busy job. Presumably this involves attending all Union committees... The current standing order (13.1.6) has been much improved by the addition of "where that is appropriate"...

R3: Ah, those were the days...

R5: In the sense of "because Standing Orders say so" or for the reasons paralleled in N4?
