DSU Notes
- The report entitled "Academic Affairs and DSU - The case for Establishing the Academic Affairs Senate"
- The minutes of the inaugural Conference of Departmental Reps, held onFebruary 9th 1979.
- The lack of concrete achievement in the area of academic affairs by DSU
- That DSU is a college-based body
- That DSU Council formulates all policy on academic affairs, without the regular consultation of departmental reps.
DSU Believes
- That Academic Affairs must play a central part in the work of any Students Union.
- That DSU's work in academic affairs should involve the present system of departmental reps and enhance their position within departments, rather than supercede it.
- That DSU Council, because it is college-based, does not provide an appropriate forum for the discussion of academic affairs.
- That it must provide a regular forum in which departmental reps can meet to discuss some common problem.
- That departmental reps have the right to take part in policy decision in academic affairs within DSU
- That elected departmental reps should be the only justifiable representatives of students in academic affairs
- That DSU Council is the sovereign body of the Union responsible for the central representation of students.
- That the departmental reps already fulfill a policy making role within their departments
- That DSU Council's role should be one of support and encouragement to the Academic Affairs Senate and the reps individually
