...We believe that since the results of the election no effort has been spared by some people whose positions give them a certain amount of influence, to make [his] position untenable. In fact, the whole atmosphere surrounding all this year's elections has been very distasteful.

If DSU wishes to improve its already poor standing among the majority of students in Durham it should not allow its senior members to act in what can only appear to be a purely personally motivated manner, which stems from inflated egos and a false understanding that they alone know what is best for DSU.

This statement followed the resignation of the President-elect. Apart from the highlighted bit that caught my attention, the other interesting fact about the election to the Presidency was that RON was not a candidate (and therefore as the sole candidate1 he was declared elected unopposed). It is known from other archives that RON had been introduced by 1981.
