Best of Council

DSU Notes

  1. That Council meetings are now being recorded.
  2. The present financial situation of DSU
  3. The bright sparks of wit and humour regularly struck during Council meetings.
  4. That there are rarely many observers at Council meetings.
  5. The variety of records, of varying quality, on the market.
  6. Max Bygraves.
  7. That some may think this motion absurd.
  8. That many think the Bay City Rollers absurd.

DSU Believes

  1. That the basically serious tone of Council meetings should not be compromised.
  2. That any legitimate means of making money is worth investigation.
  3. That it is desirable that more Durham students be attracted to Council meetings.
  4. That the scheme formulated by this motion embraces those elements of wit, imagination and inspiration often associated with success.
  5. That it is worth a try.

DSU Therefore Resolves

To mandate the Executive, and the Executive Officer (Events) in particular, to investigate the possibility of producing at regular intervals LPs entitled "The Best of DSU Council", and to report their findings to Council no later than the last Council meeting of the Michaelmas term 1977.

Three amendments were received to this motion.

1: DSU notes

  1. Peter McColl
  2. Stephen Dickenson
  3. Palatinate
  4. The magnificent generosity of DSU Council last term in awarding the Palatinate Editorial Board a party.

DSU Therefore Resolves

To mandate the Palatinate Editorial Board to buy a drink for every member of Council tonight.

2: Add to Resolves

That this is an utterly silly motion and it should be followed by even sillier activities, thus the three sabbaticals should drink a yard of ale after Council in the Dive Bar.

3:

The Sabbaticals of Nevilles Cross and Hilds/Bede should also drink yards of ale.

Amidst general confusion it emerged that somehow Council meetings should soon be gracing Top of the Pops, and all the sabbaticals patronising Alcoholics Anonymous. Inconceivably, the Palatinate crew were not obliged to buy any drinks.

Having read through the archives, I think there might be some money in this idea. Now Council is being recorded again, of course, it's entirely practical, if not necessarily desirable.
