Candidate's Diary

Day 1

So, I've returned the nomination form and been told that I need to turn up to this candidate meeting tomorrow. More meetings. I hate meetings. Fortunately sabbs don't need to go to any.

Day 2

Well, that was a bad meeting. SRO told me that I wouldn't get any publicity allowed unless I signed a piece of paper saying I had read and understood some book. That's not good. Signed it anyway, I doubt there's anything important in the book. Hopefully will have to sign fewer things when a sabb.

Day 3

Must get my manifesto written tonight. Better think of some policies. Who's idea was this document anyway? The electorate shouldn't need telling what I'm going to do, they should just trust me to be the best.

Day 4

Hustings today. In Queen's Campus. Best make something up about wanting to solve their problems. I can find out what their problems are later.

Day 5

Finally supplied the SRO with my campaign team list. Why should I have to tell anyone who's helping my campaign, it just damages their style. If I lose this one it'll be Steering's fault. Good thing I won't have to deal with them when I'm a sabb.

Day 6

More hustings. I'm getting tired of telling people things like this. How many times do the sabbs have to stand up in front of crowds and explain things? Never. Completely unrealistic that we have to do this. And they asked some really unfair questions. I'm standing for President, why do they expect me to know where Dunelm House is? One of my opponents must have planted that one, they all knew.

Day 7

Where is that SRO. It's 3 in the morning and I need publicity stamped. Whatever they're doing it can't be as important. Sabbs have it much easier, people just do everything they say, instantly. Just being available to stamp posters for two hours a day is no good at all. Never see any of the sabbs having to deal with silly time-management things like this.

Day 8

SRO told me I couldn't have any more stamped, I'd had enough. No I haven't, says I, I've only done three colleges. Not their problem, apparently. What is this? When I'm a sabb I won't have to keep to tight budgets, why do I have to now? I hear some person in the office muttering something about 'their posters being so bad they should count for negative anyway'. Wonder which candidate they're talking about.

Day 9

Managed to get a few sheets of publicity together, but it's really tricky deciding where to put them. Probably best on computer keyboards where people will see them.

Day 10

SRO phones me up in a bad mood. Apparently there's been some complaints about my publicity being in computer rooms. Not sure what's wrong with this. They mutter on about it being very serious and so on. Hopefully will have to deal with fewer complaints when I'm a sabb. SRO going on about this being very clear in the book. Perhaps I should read it.

Day 11

There it is on page 3 of that book. No publicity in computer rooms. Why didn't anyone tell me this? When I'm a sabb people aren't going to get away with keeping information from me like this.

Day 12

SRO keeps trying to contact me. It's nice to be so popular but I have a campaign to do. Should go for email instead. Much simpler. Hopefully this will get fewer complaints.

Day 13

Last day of voting. Best use up my last few sheets of paper. SRO refuses to stamp them! Says I've been almost ruled out of order for numerous breaches of the rules and have lost the remainder of my publicity allowance. Even worse, my opponents have all got an extra 200 sheets of publicity. Proof that the limit was too low, so why don't I get them too? I say I wasn't made properly aware of these rules. They wave some piece of paper with my signature on at me. Bet they don't hold sabbs to what they sign like this.

Day 14

Result got announced last night. Some complicated voting process means I came sixth. Didn't even beat that snake. Apparently this means I don't get to be a sabb. That's just unfair. Sabbs don't have to do what the majority says, why should I not be elected just because of this?

Don't you feel more sorry for the candidates now? It's clearly far too harsh to put them through a cross-campus ballot to prove that they're remotely capable of dealing with the challenges of being a sabb. Not that that's why we do it, obviously.
